About Sjømilitære Samfund
Hotell Sjømilitære Samfund is an association, founded in Stavern in 1835. When the navy's main base was moved to Karljohansvern in Horten, the association moved with.
The association rented club premises for the first few years, but gradually the need arose for its own premises. With financial help from members and other generous people, the community building was built by builder H. Hansen from Christiania.
The main building was completed for inauguration on 15 November 1883. Here you will find venerable halls for parties and 8 hotel rooms on the second floor. In the old main building, the officers had their club nights, ball and soirees. They could come for accommodation, a meal, a drink at the bar or a game of billiards.
When the navy's main base was moved to Bergen around 1960, the activity in the house changed. It was opened up for civilians to rent for parties, meetings, accommodation and other gatherings. Many have memories, most of them positive, of dance school ball and other events in the magnificent premises.
In 2017, the side building "Carl Johan" was ready for inauguration as part of the entire facility. With 39 hotel rooms and a large course and conference department, the offer has become considerably larger than originally - but the story, it is well preserved.
The community building has had various hosts over the years. Today's hosts, Torill Krosvollen Thorsen and Stig Thorsen took over the operation in 2004. They, together with their staff, are proud of the historic gem they manage and are ready to receive you as a guest.
